vCard or card page: which one should you share?
People ask for your details in two ways: send me your contact, or send me a link. A vCard answers the first. A card page answers the second.
What a vCard is
A vCard is a small file ending in .vcf. Phones and email programs read it as a contact and offer to save the name, title, organisation, email and phone number. It works offline and needs no account.
The drawback is that it is a copy. If your number changes later, the copies people already saved stay out of date.
What a card page is
A card page is a web page with the same details. You share one link. When you fix something, everyone who opens the link sees the new version.
The drawback is that someone has to host the page, and the visitor needs a connection.
A simple rule
Send a vCard when the person will save you today, for example after a conference or in an email signature. Use a card page when you want one link for a slide, a profile or a QR code. Many people use both, with a download button for the vCard on the page.
Keep the fields short
Name, title, organisation, one email, one phone number and a website cover almost every case. More fields add clutter and make it easier for the wrong person to find something private.
Common questions
Which phones open a .vcf file?
Current iPhone and Android phones and the common desktop mail and contact programs open a vCard. If one refuses, try importing the file from inside the contacts app.
Does the free tool store my details?
No. The free contact card maker runs in your browser. What you type is not sent anywhere and not stored.
